Risscycling
In 2004 we realized a need for a recycling program at CHHS. Between 2004 and 2009, with the assistance of a scale and some plastic bins, my APES students collected and transported almost 40,000 pounds of recyclables to the nearby recycling center...in exchange for some extra credit and service hours.
During this time it was discovered that: 1) the school district was paying for recycling to be picked up on a weekly basis, but it was not being picked up, and 2) although the district was paying for recycling, there was no recycling plan. An enterprising student by the name of Caitlin Collins devised a system for providing every classroom with recycling bins; she also provided us with a collection schedule so faculty and staff could put their bins out on predetermined days for pickup. Her successful endeavor resulted in a much needed change in the school's recycling climate. Students no longer transport materials themselves, the responsible company picks up recyclables on a regular timetable, and our campus produces less trash.
We can recycle/reuse: mixed paper, glass, aluminum cans, plastic bottles, newspaper, phone books, paper bags, magazines, styrofoam peanuts, compact fluorescent bulbs, CDs, plastic bags, batteries, printer cartridges, aerosol cans, 3-ring binders... We welcome any new ideas for reducing our footprint!
